Surrey v Derbyshire: Harvey Hosein equals record on debut

Hosein is the seventh wicketkeeper to claim 11 victims in a Championship match

Derbyshire's teenage wicketkeeper Harvey Hosein equalled the record for the number of catches in a Championship match against Surrey at The Oval.

The 18-year-old, who took seven catches in his first innings behind the stumps in first-class cricket, claimed another four scalps in Surrey's second innings.

After the visitors had established a lead of 29 early on day two, Surrey struggled to 114-5 in response.

Jason Roy hit 81 as they were all out for 279, leaving Derbyshire 251 to win.

Roy, who was awarded his county cap on Monday, and Arun Harinath (42) put on 122 for the sixth wicket to swing a low-scoring game slightly in the hosts' favour.

The 24-year-old Roy - whose 86-ball innings included 13 fours - was aiming to reach three figures for the second consecutive Championship match, having made 103 in last week's defeat at Worcestershire, a result that ended Surrey's chances of winning promotion.

He also became the fourth Surrey batsman to pass 1,000 first-class runs in 2014.

Earlier, the visitors added 46 runs to their overnight score of 164-5 to reach 210 all out.

Captain Wayne Madsen top-scored with 63 to pass 1,000 first-class runs for the second season in succession.

Ben Cotton (2-46) did early damage in Surrey's second innings, dismissing opener Rory Burns and the experienced Vikram Solanki to leave the home side 24-2, while Hosein became the seventh wicketkeeper to claim 11 dismissals in a Championship match when he caught Gareth Batty off the bowling of Mark Footitt.
