Worcestershire: Daryl Mitchell signs new four-year contract

Mitchell has scored 8,320 first-class runs during his career and hit 21 centuries in all forms of the game

Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell has signed a new four-year contract after leading the county to promotion.

The 30-year-old opener's previous deal still had two years to run, but he has now committed himself to the club until the end of the 2018 season.

He scored 1,334 runs at an average of 58, including five centuries, as Worcestershire finished runners-up to Hampshire in Championship Division Two.

"Worcestershire is the only club I ever want to play for," said Mitchell.

"I grew up watching and supporting the county, then going through the academy, the second team - and captaining the club is the pinnacle.

"Hopefully the best years are ahead for me. This was the best year I've had in terms of runs and averages and things like that.

"I've just about grown up enough and know my own game enough, and hopefully I can really kick on these next few years."

Mitchell made his debut for the club in 2005 and has scored 11,969 runs in all competitions, as well as taking 137 wickets and 265 catches.

Director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: "Mitch is an important and integral part of our push for better things at the club.

"He is one of our best players so for him to secure his future with Worcestershire is a huge boost for the club."
