Gareth Batty signed a new two-year deal with Surrey at the end of last season

Surrey have appointed off-spinner Gareth Batty as club captain.

The 37-year-old, who is in his second spell with the county, has previously skippered the side and takes over the role from wicketkeeper Gary Wilson.

"Gareth is a very honest man, of fine character and a good leader," Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart told BBC London 94.9.

"He has the respect of the dressing room and we have every confidence that he will lead the team forward."

Batty played for Surrey between 1998 and 2001 and returned ahead of the 2010 campaign.

The former Worcestershire player signed a new two-year deal with Surrey at the end of last season, after taking 39 Championship wickets at an average of 23.46.

"It is a huge honour to be appointed the captain of Surrey and the club is proud to have him," Stewart added.

"He has captained previously as a stand-in but now he has got the job on merit.

"It is his team and we are here to support him. He understands the responsibilities which come with captaincy, both on and off the field. We believe he is the right man for the job."
