Hampshire have signed West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards as a Kolpak player across all formats for the second half of the 2015 season.

The 33-year-old will join in time for Hampshire's opening One-Day Cup match against Sussex on 27 July.

Edwards last played for the West Indies in 2012, but has been with Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel.

"I hope I can play a part in helping to bring success to the Ageas Bowl this year," Edwards told the club website. , external

What does Kolpak mean?

The 'Kolpak' ruling - handed down in 2003 - declared that citizens of certain countries which have agreements with the European Union have the same right to freedom of work and movement within the EU as EU citizens. Therefore, a 'Kolpak' cricketer, like an EU passport-holder, can play in England and not be classed as an overseas player - even if he is not qualified to play for England.

Hampshire were promoted from Division Two of the County Championship last season and Edwards is the club's second signing after all-rounder Gareth Berg.

Edwards impressed while playing against Hampshire and Nottinghamshire on their recent pre-season tours of Barbados, taking 8-40 against Notts.

Hampshire's director of cricket Giles White told BBC Radio Solent: "He's obviously got experience at the highest level and there aren't many bowlers around that have that.

"He bowls with pace and swings the ball and hopefully he gives us that wicket-taking ability."
