Joe Burns joins Middlesex as replacement for Adam Voges

Burns is regarded as one of Australia's brightest prospects.

Middlesex have signed Australia batsman Joe Burns as a replacement for Adam Voges.

The club have been looking to bring in a new overseas player since Voges was named in Australia's Ashes squad.

Burns, 25, will play for Middlesex from early May until the middle of July and is available for seven Championship matches and 11 T20 Blast games.

Middlesex plan to sign another overseas player when Burns leaves to tour India with the Australia A squad on 18 July.

Burns and Voges will both be available to play in the opening T20 Blast fixture against Gloucestershire.

However, Voges will miss most of the Championship season as Australia tour the West Indies and then England.

He won a call-up ahead of Burns, who did not make the Ashes squad despite scoring half centuries in both innings in the last of his two Test appearances against India in January.

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser told BBC London 94.9: "He's an exciting young player - a good one-day cricketer and an outstanding fielder.

"He played in the last two Test matches of the Australian summer and I suppose in some ways was a bit unfortunate to be left out."

Burns enjoyed a productive Sheffield Shield season with Queensland, scoring almost 800 runs at an average of 53.

During the winter he also scored 278 runs at an average of 46 in 50-over cricket.

"I'm very excited to sign with Middlesex for this season," said Burns. "The chance to call Lord's home is going to be special.

"The club has high ambitions for success in Division 1, which was important for me."
