County Championship: Steven Davies hits double ton in Cardiff

Steven Davies completed a maiden double century as Surrey piled up 563-7 before declaring against Glamorgan at Cardiff.

Davies and Kumar Sangakkara extended their third-wicket stand to 294, a club record against the Welsh county.

The Sri Lankan eventually fell for 149, but Davies reached an unbeaten 200 before Gareth Batty called a halt.

Seam bowler Andy Carter took 4-110 for Glamorgan and skipper Jacques Rudolph led the reply with 69 as the home side closed on 124-2, 439 runs in arrears.

Davies batted for almost six and a half hours in total, faced 290 balls and hit 21 boundaries in his century, the kind of form that led to him being part of England's squad for the 2010-11 Ashes series in Australia.

His only major alarm came on 154 when a mix-up with partner Jason Roy would have seen him run out if Dean Cosker's throw had hit the stumps.

Matthew Dunn bowled James Kettleborough for 15 when Glamorgan batted, but Rudolph and Will Bragg (19 not out) added 57 for the second wicket before the former was caught low at slip by Roy from Batty's off-spin seven overs before the close.

Glamorgan skipper Jacques Rudolph told BBC Wales Sport:

"Considering the wicket was quite flat, a lot of credit has got to go to our bowling unit in tough conditions, they showed great attitude.

"I thought we batted really nicely, it's pity I got out just before the end but I got a good ball and there's not much I could do about that.

"If Will Bragg and Colin Ingram get stuck in we should be able to have a good day tomorrow.

"Somewhere in our innings we've got to have a 150-200 run partnership and we'd be in a good position."

Surrey batsman Kumar Sangakkara:

"It's a hard job to keep wicket and bat in the top four and the position was taken away from me when, if it was down to me, I would have kept doing it and that would have been the wrong decision.

"As long as he's (Davies) comfortable with the position he's taken and way he's batting, he'll be fine.

"If anyone can bat that well, he's definitely a specialist batsman, and as a non-striker there was a lot to admire standing at the other end.

"He was at ease from ball one and never looked rushed or ruffled right through his innings."
