Kevin Pietersen managed just two on his first Surrey return since hitting a triple century and being told he would not be selected by England.
Pietersen lasted three balls on rain-affected day at The Oval against Lancashire when Kyle Jarvis had him caught at first slip by Paul Horton.
An unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 71 between Steve Davies and Jason Roy saw Surrey through to the close on 145-4.
Play did not get under way until 15:00 BST, and just 46 overs were bowled.
The hosts had fallen to 46-2 when Tom Bailey had Rory Burns caught behind and Kumar Sangakkara top-edged Jordan Clarke to James Faulkner at long leg.
Zimbabwean bowler Jarvis got rid of Zafar Ansari in an identical fashion to Pietersen.
Davies hit eight fours on his way to an unbeaten 41, the third highest run-scorer for the day being extras - with 18 runs being signalled as byes.
Earlier in May, Pietersen fell just short of the highest-ever score for Surrey when he was left on 355 not out against Leicestershire.
