Angus Robson hit his first hundred of the season to anchor Leicestershire's first innings against Essex.

The opener hit 15 fours in his 120 but most of his team-mates struggled at Chelmsford against a bowling attack led by Graham Napier (3-62).

Robson put on a partnership of 74 with Clint McKay (45) before he edged a new-ball delivery from Jesse Ryder to first slip as the visitors made 280.

Essex lost both openers in response to finish on 43-2, still 71 behind.

Napier reaches a milestone

Graham Napier reached 400 first-class wickets in his 156th match when Ben Raine was caught at slip by Nick Browne.

Earlier, Leicestershire lost Matthew Boyce and Mark Cosgrove to James Porter (3-69) and Ned Eckersley to Ryder before Napier struck in quick succession to leave them 170-6.

McKay's efforts to then support Robson, the only person to pass 50 in the match, were important in giving Leicestershire the momentum and a first-innings lead of 114, before the bowlers pushed home their advantage.

Leicestershire are without a Championship win since the final match of the 2012 season, having gone 37 matches without a victory,
