County Championship: Wickets tumble at Trent Bridge on day two

The bowlers dominated the second day between Nottinghamshire and Sussex at Trent Bridge as 14 wickets fell to leave the game intriguingly poised.

Notts seamer Jake Ball claimed 6-49, his maiden five-wicket haul, as the visitors were bowled out for 189.

The hosts slumped to 108-7 as Steve Magoffin took 4-48 to go with his 6-109 in the first-innings - the third time he has taken 10 wickets in a match.

But Samit Patel (88 no) saw Notts to 228-7 at stumps - a lead of 294.

The late fightback from Patel and 19-year-old Luke Wood (52 not out), in which they shared an unbroken stand of 120, was in great contrast to the first two sessions.

Earlier in the day, Ball ran through the Sussex middle order after they resumed on 39-3, as he trapped captain Chris Nash lbw, bowled Luke Wright and then tempted Ben Brown to edge behind his next ball.

Craig Cachopa and Chris Jordan (39) stopped the slump with a seventh-wicket stand of 69 before first-innings centurion Wood returned to send Jordan's stumps flying.

The wickets continued to fall in the afternoon session as Ball bowled Cachopa for 54 and cleaned up the tail with some help from Steven Mullaney.

However, the hosts were soon in trouble after their top order failed for the second time in the game.

They struggled to 48-4, with evergreen Australian pace bowler Magoffin and Ollie Robinson claiming two wickets each.

After tea, Magoffin removed Greg Smith and Will Gidman in the same over to leave Notts struggling at seven wickets down.

But Patel and Wood's extraordinary counter attack, which saw Wood given a life when he was bowled off a no-ball by Jordan, means they will go into day three on top.
