Fast bowler Michael Hogan says Glamorgan need another healthy batting contribution from their lower order after early problems against Essex.

The Welsh county slipped to 40-3 in the final hour, with Jesse Ryder claiming all three, after dismissing Essex for 279 at Chelmsford.

"We pride ourselves on our runs down the order and it's been going well for us so far this year," said Hogan, 34.

"But we'll see what happens [on day two].

Hogan was Glamorgan's star with the ball again, taking four for 36 and conceding under two runs an over.

He is still confident his seam-bowling colleagues can contribute with the bat to put them back into the game.

"With Craig Meschede at six and Graham Wagg at eight or nine, it's a pretty reasonable tail.

"We know Waggy's in good form so if he gets in, he can score some runs."

Hogan himself turned in a typically accurate display to prevent the Essex batsmen getting away to big scores, with opener Jaik Mickleburgh's 50 being the highest.

"I didn't really try to do too much with it, just bowl quite straight on a pretty flat wicket, hit a reasonable length and got a few lbws and a cheeky caught-and-bowled.

"There's no tricks to bowl a consistent line and length and wait for them to make mistakes."

"We bowled quite well as a group on what we thought was a pretty flat wicket, so good that we bowled them out, but not an ideal start with the bat."

Hogan also revealed he has taken less stick than expected from his Glamorgan colleagues over Australia's defeat in the first Ashes test back in Cardiff- and that he isn't expecting too many changes from the tourists.

"It's only game one. It's been quite pleasant in the changing room," said Hogan.

"I know there's some decent players waiting in the wings [for Australia] if there are changes.

"The two Marsh boys [Shaun and Mitchell] are coming off decent form in the practice matches, so they won't lose anything if they make changes - but you probably wouldn't expect them to make any until after the second Test."

The Glamorgan side playing Essex features two changes from draw with Derbyshire. .

Chris Cooke and Aneurin Donald have come in, though teenager Donald fell for 14 on his first Championship appearance of the season.
