County Championship: Ryder helps Essex dominate Glamorgan

Career-best bowling figures from Jesse Ryder strengthened Essex's hold over Glamorgan after two days at Chelmsford.

Play got under way 75 minutes late and the first session was further halted by rain, as the visitors slumped from 40-3 to 107-7 with Ryder taking 6-47.

Colin Ingram's 43 and David Lloyd's quick-fire unbeaten 20 helped push the total to 162 all out.

Essex extended their lead to 195 runs by the close as they reached 78-0 and Nick Browne ended the day 42 not out.

Liam Dawson, who is unbeaten on 30, was promoted to the top of the order because of an injury to Jaik Mickleburgh.

Opener Mickleburgh, who scored a half-century in the first innings, will bat at seven or lower after being off the field with back spasm trouble.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Ryder took the first two wickets to fall as Glamorgan quickly found themselves struggling at 59-5, but Mark Wallace hit five fours in making 21 before being trapped leg-before by David Masters (3-53).

Lloyd hit a six and three fours in his 15-ball cameo, but Michael Hogan was bowled by Graham Napier off his pads as Glamorgan ended their first innings 117 runs behind.

Glamorgan head coach Toby Radford:

"It was a combination of some good bowling - Ryder bowled exceptionally well - one or two false shots and a couple of decisions which could have gone either way.

"You can't expect (the lower order) to do it all the time, we look at the top six to get the bulk of the runs.

"The middle and lower order have done it all season, unfortunately today we didn't quite do it and it gave them quite a substantial lead."
