Opener Ben Duckett offered further evidence of his potential as Northants dominated day one against Kent.
They bowled out the home side for 167 at Canterbury, despite 50 by Joe Denly, as paceman Olly Stone took 4-59.
The visitors then reached 172-2 at close of play after 20-year-old Duckett and David Murphy (42) shared an opening partnership of 105.
Duckett, who made 154 in his last Championship innings, struck 13 boundaries in his unbeaten 94.
Northants began the game against a background of stories about the club's financial situation and with a much-changed team.
They gave a first-class debut to 17-year-old Saif Zaib, but it was Stone who took the plaudits in the first two sessions and Kent were grateful for an innings of 49 by Calum Haggett after slumping to 119-8.
