Wayne Madsen compiled a magnificent unbeaten 164 to put Derbyshire on top on day one against Leicestershire.

Charlie Shreck and Ben Raine had the visitors wobbling on 38-3 after they were put in to bat in bowler-friendly conditions at Grace Road.

Madsen arrived at the crease in the fourth over and after being dropped on 11, he batted out the rest of the day.

Shiv Thakor provided good support with a brisk 41 against his former county as the visitors reached 320-8 at stumps.

Shreck (3-68) had earlier struck with his first ball of the day, bowling Ben Slater to reach 50 first-class wickets for the season, and soon had Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan caught by Angus Robson for four.

Clint McKay also took two wickets as the Leicestershire attack chipped away, but they could not shift Madsen who led the fightback almost single-handedly.

He was caught soon after passing 50, but Mark Cosgrove was no-balled for hitting the stumps, and the Derbyshire skipper capitalised, bringing up a patient ton off 203 balls and reaching 150 just 48 balls later.
