Yorkshire 494: Ballance 165 not out, Bresnan 78; Robinson 3-72

Sussex 175-4: Joyce 100; Rashid 3-67

Yorkshire 5pts, Sussex 2pts

Gary Ballance displayed his England credentials with 165 for Yorkshire in the Championship, before Ed Joyce's ton helped Sussex end day two on 175-4.

Ballance, who ended day one on 98, hit his first century since April's Test against the West Indies before being bowled by Chris Liddle.

That ended a 197-run stand with Tim Bresnan (78) as the visitors, who began the day 346-6, were all out for 494.

Joyce then hit 100 off 143 before being caught off leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Rashid (3-67) had earlier taken two wickets in three balls - Luke Wells (43) and Matt Machan (0) - as he pushes for a place in England's Test squad for their winter series against Pakistan in the UAE.

And after Liam Plunkett had dismissed Chris Nash (18) lbw, Rashid removed Joyce with 14 balls left in the day when the left-hander chipped him to short leg.

Ballance, dropped after two Ashes Tests this summer, impressed with his 26th first-class century and reached his 150 by clubbing a six over long on from Chris Nash's spin.

He was finally out when left-arm seamer Liddle struck his off stump, but not before he had put the Tykes firmly in control of the match as they close in on retaining their Championship title.

Record breakers

The Ballance and Bresnan partnership was a record for Yorkshire's seventh wicket against Sussex, beating the 157 added by Bresnan and Kane Williamson at Scarborough in 2014.
