County Championship: Karl Brown helps Lancashire pile up runs

Karl Brown now has a ton to add to his seven half-centuries for Lancashire this summer

Lancashire's Karl Brown made his first century for more than four years as the hosts took their time to build a score against County Championship Division Two promotion rivals Glamorgan.

Alex Davies fell five short of a maiden hundred as the home batsmen dominated day two at Old Trafford.

Having made 462, the Lancashire innings was into a sixth session before it came to an end in the 141st over.

Glamorgan then reached 48-1 off 16 overs in reply by the close of play.

Having reached his first century in 96 first-class innings stretching back to April 2011, opener Brown went on to make 132 - his highest score for Lancashire - before pulling David Lloyd to mid-wicket.

Steven Croft, who helped Brown add 132 for the fourth wicket, was caught behind for a 164-ball 67 - one of four scalps for Craig Meschede.

Davies (95) then put on 128 for the sixth wicket in 22 overs with James Faulkner (63) before the Australian all-rounder's pull-drive off Meschede found the safe hands of Lloyd at long on.

Lancashire opener Karl Brown told BBC Sport:

"I've felt good all season but to get over the line and get three figures is a nice feeling. However, I always felt it was going to happen and I just had that little bit of luck I didn't have in previous innings.

"I never doubted my ability to score hundreds but I just had a couple of technical issues that I needed to iron out and I feel now that I'm in a position to score more.

"I'm used to opening because I did it when I first came onto the staff and there's obviously going to be a big hole to fill now that Paul Horton is leaving.

"He is a player who has scored a lot of runs for us over the years. He will be tough to replace. But it has opened up a big chance for both myself and Haseeb Hameed."

Glamorgan all-rounder Craig Meschede told BBC Wales Sport:

"It's a pretty flat wicket and they batted really well, with two guys getting good scores. It was quite a tough wicket to bowl on.

"They chucked a couple of wickets away and that came to our advantage, so it was really good for us to manage to bowl them out.

"I struggled in the beginning to get the rhythm going but I'm pleased to get a four-for. I've had a lot of playing and missing this year.

"It's the most I've ever bowled, this season, but I suppose that's a good thing for me and a good learning curve."
