Chesney Hughes hit an unbeaten 85 as Derbyshire shared an even day with Surrey on day one at The Oval.

A 79-run first-wicket partnership between Ben Slater and Billy Godleman gave Derbyshire a good start before the latter was bowled by Zafar Ansari.

The Surrey all-rounder also trapped Slater and Wes Durston lbw and taking a return catch from Wayne Madsen.

Despite wickets falling around him, Hughes hit eight fours in his innings as Derbyshire closed on 209-5.

Surrey need to win if they are going to promoted from Division Two this week - they require 15 points to make certain of a top-two finish.
