County Championship: Bairstow & Ballance star for Yorkshire

Jonny Bairstow has hit five hundreds and five half-centuries for Yorkshire this season

Jonny Bairstow passed 1,000 runs in just his 13th County Championship innings of the season as Yorkshire took control against Somerset at Headingley.

The England batsman made 91 as the hosts were all out for 391 after tea on day two - a first innings lead of 281.

Earlier Gary Ballance was dismissed for 91 by Craig Overton (4-64), while nightwatchman Steven Patterson made 44.

The Championship leaders then reduced Somerset to 44-2 at stumps with wickets for Ryan Sidebottom and Jack Brooks.

Bairstow, who replaced Ballance in the England Test team for the final three Ashes tests of the summer, has now scored 1,071 runs for the Championship leaders this campaign at an average of 107.10.

However, it was Ballance and Patterson who took the plaudits in the morning session as they extended their partnership to 90.

Ballance nicked Overton to Marcus Trescothick nine short of his 27th first-class century before Patterson soon followed, having resisted for more than two hours, but Bairstow took the attack to the bowlers in the afternoon, striking 11 fours and a six in his 124-ball innings.

The 25-year-old looked set for a sixth hundred of the season, but was last man out when his middle stump was sent flying by paceman Lewis Gregory (3-75).

Having been bowled out for 110 first time around, Somerset's second innings got off to an equally poor start as captain Trescothick and Tom Abell both fell inside the first five overs.

Australian Aaron Finch, who scored just 13 with the bat, dismissed Abell with a magnificent diving one-handed catch at slip off Brooks.

James Hildreth and Tom Cooper saw the visitors through to the close, but they still need another 237 just to make Yorkshire bat again.
