Dan Lawrence and Ryan ten Doeschate both were amongst the runs to help Essex to 360-6 on day one of their Division Two match at Derbyshire.
Lawrence (87) helped the visitors make a relatively solid, as they passed 150 for the loss of just two wickets.
Ten Doeschate (88) then enjoyed a sixth-wicket stand of 145 alongside Mark Pettini (70no) before being caught off the bowling of Mark Footitt (3-88).
Bad light stopped play with just one of the day's scheduled overs remaining.
Essex will resume with Pettini still in, alongside James Foster (nine not out).
Derbyshire have ground to make up after a fairly disappointing day in the field, and Shiv Thakor (1-64) and Tony Palladino (0-46) both suffered injuries after tea.
