County Championship: Hampshire survive after beating Notts

Michael Carberry finished the season with 1,129 Championship runs

Hampshire stayed in Division One after they beat Nottinghamshire by eight wickets and Sussex lost to Yorkshire.

Resuming on 89-0, chasing a target of 200, Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry extended their stand to 129 before Adams was bowled by Jake Ball for 70.

James Vince followed next ball in the same fashion, but Carberry saw his side to 200-2 with an unbeaten 84.

Sussex, set 309 to win by the county champions, were all out for 208 confirming their relegation.

Hampshire, who went into the game knowing they had to win to stand any chance of survival, wrapped up their victory on the stroke of lunch.

All eyes then turned to Headingley where Sussex were bowled out almost three hours later.

Hampshire's batting, which had failed so often this season, clicked when it mattered as former skipper Adams was first to bring up his half-century off 81 balls.

The only brief wobble came when he and Vince fell to consecutive deliveries, but Carberry and Will Smith (34 not out) settled any nerves with an unbroken stand of 71.

Carberry brought the match to a quick conclusion, smashing Samit Patel for four boundaries and a six in his final nine deliveries.

Defeat for Nottinghamshire means they finish third, with Middlesex confirmed as runners-up.
