England weren't good enough - Root

England "weren't good enough" on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan, but can still save the game, according to batsman Joe Root.

The tourists collapsed from 182-3 overnight to 242 all out in the morning, then saw Pakistan progress to 222-3 at stumps - a lead of 358 runs.

"Pakistan bowled really well at us and we weren't disciplined," said Root, who was dismissed for 88.

"Then we weren't able to build pressure as a bowling unit."

The England vice-captain added: "We've got a huge amount of talent in that dressing room but we weren't good enough."

However, Root rejected the idea that England have become over-reliant on him and captain Alastair Cook, who made 65 in this Test and 263 in the first.

How's stat?!

Since the start of this summer's Ashes, Joe Root and Alastair Cook are averaging 63.04. The rest of England's batsmen are averaging 21.5.

"I don't think that's fair," he said. "There are a few guys playing their first tour in these conditions.

"You can single out other individuals but you've got two set batters in there this morning [Root and Jonny Bairstow, who was out for 45] and we didn't go on and make big scores. That's all it needed."

England are already facing what would be their highest successful run chase in Test cricket, but Root believes they can avoid defeat.

"We're going to have to play out of our skins," he said.

"But you look at the wicket and how it played tonight - there wasn't massive demons. So we just need a couple of guys to stand up and make up some big scores."
