Northamptonshire 296-2: Duckett 178 not out

Sussex: Yet to bat

Northamptonshire 2 pts, Sussex 0 pts

Northants opener Ben Duckett made a career-best 178 not out as Sussex toiled on their return to Division Two.

Openers Jake Libby (42) and Duckett saw Northants reach 130 without loss, and Alex Wakely (51) added a half century.

Australian Steve Magoffin (1-31) offered Sussex's best bowling threat and had Libby lbw, while spinner Danny Briggs took the wicket of Wakely.

The hosts were 296-2 when bad light stopped play, with Jack Cobb set to resume with 21-year-old Duckett.

Northants batsman Ben Duckett: "I'm pretty chuffed. The job isn't done, I've still got to try to go past 200 tomorrow (Monday).

"There were games last year when I was frustrated, getting out when set to go and make a huge score so it's a great chance to do it on day two.

"There was a bit of nip early on and Steve Magoffin bowled really well - but the plan was to play as straight as possible and stay patient and we managed to do that."
