County Championship: Lancashire's Liam Livingstone hits maiden century at Taunton

Lancashire's Liam Livingstone made a fifty on his first-class debut against Nottinghamshire last month

Liam Livingstone made his maiden first-class century to leave Lancashire in a healthy position at the end of the second day against Somerset at Taunton.

Resuming on their overnight score of 295-4, visiting skipper Steven Croft fell just six runs short of a century for 94 before a rain break on 372-6.

When they came back on, 22-year-old Livingstone went on to make an unbeaten 108 before Croft declared on 493-9.

Somerset then survived three overs from Jimmy Anderson to close on 14-0.

Livingstone, who made headlines when he scored 350 in a club match for Nantwich early last season, was a regular member of Lancashire's T20 Blast-winning side last summer.

And, after making 70 on his first-class debut in their opening win over Nottinghamshire, he has clearly taken quickly to the longer form of the game.

He hit nine fours and two sixes in his 152-ball innings, sharing a stand of 80 in 19 overs for the ninth wicket with Kyle Jarvis (34).

But it was generally slow progress, only one run coming in the first five overs of the day, for the loss of Alex Davies, as the visitors missed out on two batting points.

Somerset wicketkeeper Ryan Davies:

"We were very disciplined. The boys stuck in there incredibly well, especially after 97 overs in the dirt on the first day.

"In the end we did get our rewards. Occasionally, on the first day we did bowl a little bit short, but we found our length and bowled well.

"Realistically, I can't see anything other than a draw. I'm backing our batsmen. If they manage to bowl us out twice on that pitch, it would be an incredible effort. To take 20 wickets would take something spectacular."

Lancashire batsman Liam Livingstone told BBC Radio Manchester:

"It's very pleasing. It's been a great day for the team, and obviously personally a very proud moment to score my first hundred.

"It's one of the things you dream of as a kid, and it's been a long time coming. Luckily I've got my chance and managed to do well in my first two games.

"I've started very slowly in the last couple of seasons, built my way up and ended very strongly. That was the one thing I've worked on this winter and why I went away to Australia to try and hit the ground running."
