Sean Ervine and Tom Alsop's unbeaten 65-run fifth-wicket stand helped Hampshire recover on day one at The Ageas bowl against Nottinghamshire.

Jimmy Adams and Liam Dawson were dismissed off consecutive Luke Fletcher deliveries as the hosts fell to 60-3.

Notts' opening bowlers pitched the ball up and Jake Ball (2-42) trapped Will Smith in front for his second scalp.

Despite intermittent rain Ervine (38 not out) and Alsop (32 not out) took Hampshire to 149-4 at the close.

The away side looked to be in ascendency in the morning in Southampton as Ball had Michael Carberry caught at third slip by debutant Dan Christian.

Carberry's struggles with the bat continued with the 35-year-old scoring over 20 just once in eight innings so far this season, having hit a century against Middlesex.

Sharp fielding off his own bowling by Fletcher saw him remove Adams with a tidy catch over his shoulder before Dawson failed to pick the line of the ball and went lbw.

Though rain meant little play was possible after tea, Ervine and Alsop held firm for the hosts to ensure there were no further loss of wickets.
