World League Five: Guernsey edge to Duckworth-Lewis win in opener

Guernsey are competing in the tournament in Jersey after promotion from World League Six in September 2015

Guernsey pulled off a five-run Duckworth-Lewis victory over Vanuatu on a rain-hit opening day of World League Five at FB Fields.

Put in to bat, the Pacific nation posted 127-7 from their reduced 26 overs.

Jonathan Dunn hit 42, with Guernsey bowlers Matt Stokes, David Hooper and Tom Kirk all taking two wickets.

In reply, Guernsey slumped from 56-1 to 81-6 before Kirk hit 15 to help them to 105-6 from 21 overs when the rain came.

"We spent a lot of the day waiting around for the game to start," skipper Jamie Nussbaumer told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"But the boys fielded and bowled really well to restrict them to 127, which we always felt comfortable chasing.

"We got off to a good start. Wickets tumbled slightly, but we batted really well at the end to get that partnership and get us over the line."

The eventual finalists in the six-team tournament will both win promotion to World League Four in Los Angeles later in 2016.

The bottom three face relegation out of the World League structure into regional continental tournaments.

In Saturday's other opening matches, Jersey's clash with top-seeds Oman was abandoned because of the weather and will be replayed on Monday, while Nigeria beat Tanzania by six wickets.
