Worcestershire: George Rhodes signs new two-year contract at New Road

Worcestershire all-rounder George Rhodes has signed a new two-year contract at New Road.

The 22-year-old son of Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes has made a first-team breakthrough this season, playing in two One-Day Cup group games and one in the T20 Blast.

But his chances are currently limited by the club's two overseas players.

Rhodes became the third generation of his family to play for a first-class county earlier this season.

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather Billy, who played for Nottinghamshire, and former Yorkshire, Worcestershire and England wicketkeeper Steve, Rhodes enjoyed a fine debut at Headingley in early June, taking 2-34 in a win over Yorkshire.

After wicketkeeper Ben Cox agreed a new four-year deal last week, Worcestershire have now signed 11 players on new contracts since last August.

"It's been really great to see George develop nicely over the last couple of years," said assistant coach Matt Mason. "Not only as a top order player but as a spin bowler as well.

"We've also been impressed with his leadership qualities. Our second XI coach Kevin Sharp holds George in high regard, particularly his captaincy."
