County Championship: Worcestershire's Tom Fell makes 61 on return from cancer

Tom Fell hit 61 in his first innings since returning from cancer treatment as Worcestershire struggled on day two against Leicestershire at New Road.

The hosts collapsed from 135-1 to 193-7 after Fell and Daryl Mitchell's 97-run second-wicket stand was broken.

Earlier, Leicestershire moved from 299-7 to 407 all out as they were boosted by Ned Eckersley's unbeaten 92.

Brett D'Oliveira (4-80) caught and bowled Ben Raine and got Charlie Shreck lbw as Eckersley was left stranded.

Fell, 22, who missed the start of the season after undergoing chemotherapy treatment, had been playing in Worcestershire's 2nd XI prior to his first-team return.

He was caught by Eckersley off Raine soon after skipper Mitchell had been run out for 52.

Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford & Worcester:

"It took us longer than we wanted to get the last three wickets but then there was some good stuff with Mitchell and Fell.

"It was a really good partnership but it was a tragic run out. It was poor running.

"It just opened a little niche for the Leicestershire bowlers to really get through us. They did so in good fashion with some reverse swing."

Leicestershire's Ned Eckersley told BBC Radio Leicester:

"We spoke at the start of the day about putting partnerships together. Ben Raine and Richard Jones played some really good shots. They came in like top order batters. I never felt under pressure to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

"That allowed me and the team to climb on to a score that has put us in a pretty good position. Obviously not to get to 100 is disappointing but to help the team into this position is much more important.

"We bowled fantastically well especially in the final session. The guys kept going, not to give them anything and dry the runs up. Then we took our chances really well."
