Steven Mullaney's Championship-best 161 not out put Nottinghamshire in control versus Somerset at Trent Bridge.
He shared a 196-run first-wicket partnership with opener Jake Libby before Libby edged Tim Groenewald to Jim Allenby at gully.
However, Mullaney brought up his three figures as he launched Joe Leach for six before the bowler dismissed Michael Lumb and Brendan Taylor cheaply.
The hosts closed on 311-4, with Mullaney having carried his bat.
Notts' decision to bat after winning the toss on a sun-drenched pitch paid dividends, as Mullaney hit 16 fours and two sixes en route to his century.
Leach looked to drag Somerset back into the match as he had Lumb caught behind for 10 before Taylor was well taken in the deep.
Mullaney was given a second life on 140, when he was dropped by Marcus Trescothick at slip off Craig Overton.
Allenby struck late as he trapped Riki Wessels leg before but the hosts are in a commanding position.
