One-Day Cup: Holders Gloucestershire beat Sussex at Cheltenham

Gloucestershire spinner Tom Smith took 4-26 as the One-Day Cup holders revived their hopes of a quarter-final place with a 51-run victory over Sussex.

Batting first at Cheltenham, the hosts totalled 242-8, Michael Klinger top scoring with 46, backed by Smith (43).

Sussex, however, were soon reduced to 59-4 before Harry Finch and Ben Brown (39) shared a stand of 70.

Finch hit a six and eight fours but ran out of partners on 87 as they were all out for 191 with 4.2 overs unused.

Gloucestershire's victory was only their second in five games, leaving them two points adrift of the top four in eighth place in the South Group, two points above bottom club Sussex, who have won just once.

Paceman Jofra Archer marked his first 50-over appearance for the visitors by dismissing Chris Dent in his second over.

But fellow Barbadian Chris Jordan was the most successful Sussex bowler, the England all-rounder claiming 3-55.

Ed Joyce was dropped without scoring at the start of Sussex's reply, but soon fell to Matt Taylor, who also picked up the important wicket of Luke Wright.

With wickets falling at the other end, Finch took 88 balls to reach 50 and he got within five runs of his highest List A score before last man Danny Briggs was bowled by Benny Howell (2-38).

Sussex skipper Luke Wright told BBC Sussex:

"I blame myself as much as anyone. I played a poor shot. I felt fine and should have been playing straight, it's very very frustrating some poor shots in there.

"I can't blame the bowlers at all, we need one of the senior players to stand up and be there at the end. I'm not worried about the younger guys, it's a few of the senior guys who need to stand up.

"Mustafizur Rahman had a niggle in his shoulder injury today. Hopefully he will be back for the game against Hampshire on Wednesday."
