Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer's unbroken stand of 118 led a fine Sussex recovery against Essex at Colchester.
Openers Ed Joyce (92) and Chris Nash (35) put on 124 for the visitors, but Nash's dismissal sparked a collapse either side of tea to 173-6.
But Jordan (59 not out) and Archer (60 not out) took Sussex to 291-6, trailing the Division Two leaders by 67.
Earlier, Jordan ran through Essex's tail, taking the last four wickets for 11 as they were out for 358.
