World Cricket League: Jersey lose to Oman in opening game

Anthony Hawkins-Kay and Corey Bisson took Jersey from 99-5 to 203-5 but it was not enough for victory against Oman

Jersey began their World League Four campaign with a six-wicket loss to Oman, as 15-year-old Harrison Carlyon became the youngest male player to play for Jersey in international cricket.

Carlyon was out for one, but Anthony Hawkins-Kay and Corey Bisson shared an unbeaten century stand to haul Jersey to 203-5 from their 50 overs.

But SS Khadye hit 79 not out to guide Oman to victory with 20 balls to spare.

"We put a lot into that," Jersey coach Neil MacRae told BBC Radio Jersey.

"I thought we fought really hard throughout their innings and the second half of the game.

"A great partnership from Corey and Anthony gave us a competitive total. Unfortunately they batted well and on a flat wicket we've got to accept that they played good cricket today."

MacRae's side had been put in to bat first, and opener Nat Watkins was back in the pavilion after just seven balls of the innings, run out for three.

History-maker Carlyon, still a schoolboy, went to the crease with his side on 85-3 but could not inject any momentum, going for one from 21 balls.

When Luke Gallichan (43) was bowled in the next over Jersey were in real trouble at 99-5, but Hawkins-Kay's 48 not out along with Bisson's unbeaten 54 took Jersey past 200.

Oman always looked just about on top and in control of the run chase, despite spinner Rhys Palmer dismissing both openers, including big-hitter Zeeshan Maqsood caught in the deep by Carlyon.

In Saturday's other matches in the Los Angeles-based tournament, hosts USA eased to an eight-wicket win over Bermuda, while Denmark thrashed Italy by 114 runs.

On both previous occasions Jersey have reached this level of the World League structure, they have been relegated straight back down to Division Five.
