Faf du Plessis: South Africa captain fined for ball-tampering v Australia

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has been fined but will not be banned for ball-tampering during the second Test victory over Australia in Hobart.

Television footage appeared to show the 32-year-old licking his finger and shining the ball while eating a sweet.

Du Plessis was charged with breaching level two of the International Cricket Council code of conduct relating to "changing the condition of the ball" using an artificial substance.

He was fined 100% of his match fee.

Three penalty points have also been added to Du Plessis' disciplinary record, but he will be available to play in the third Test in Adelaide on Thursday.

Du Plessis, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, has been deputising as skipper for the injured AB de Villiers and led South Africa to the series win with one match to spare.

Speaking before the hearing, head coach Russell Domingo said: "It's been an interesting few days.

"We have had a wonderful tour here and we have played great cricket. We have had long discussions and our focus now is purely on cricket."

In 2013, Du Plessis was fined 50% of his match fee for ball tampering in the second Test against Pakistan.

He was caught on camera rubbing the ball against a zip on his pocket on the third day of the match in Dubai, leading umpires to penalise South Africa five runs and change the ball.

On that occasion, he did not contest the charge.
