Lancashire v Surrey: Kumar Sangakkara makes 14 in first innings of final game

Kumar Sangakkara made 14 in the first innings of his final first-class game as Surrey declared on 201-8 on day one against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

The Sri Lankan, 39, who will retire at the end of the season and has hit nine centuries in 14 innings this term, was removed by Saqib Mahmood (4-50).

Sam Curran hit an unbeaten 56 before Surrey declared having just claimed their first batting point.

The hosts closed on 17-0 after seeing out the final nine overs of the day.

Second-placed Surrey, whose declaration denied third-placed Lancashire to gain a third bowling point, began the day three points ahead. The winners of the match will finish as runners-up to champions Essex.

Rory Burns, Scott Borthwick and Rikki Clarke also fell to 20-year-old Lancashire seamer Mahmood, who was playing just the fourth first-class game of his career - and his first at Old Trafford.

Gareth Batty was caught for a duck by Matt Parkinson off the bowling of Stephen Parry, before Curran guided Surrey to a batting point with a 106-ball half-century.

Rob Jones and Alex Davies saw the day out for Lancashire as they both hit a boundary on their way to finishing on 17-0, trailing by 184 runs.

Lancashire seamer Saqib Mahmood:

"My first first-class game at Old Trafford and it's one I won't forget in a hurry. From a bowling point of view we couldn't really have done much more.

"I was so annoyed they declared, I'm on four wickets and every ball I felt I was going to get a wicket and they go and declare, so I wasn't very happy if I'm honest.

"I was excited this morning to finally get a first-class game here. It's a one-off game and for me I want to stake my claim as much as I can.

"We had a plan on how to bowl to Kumar Sangakkara at lunch and to come out and nail the plan, I couldn't quite believe it had come off. Great scalp."

Surrey head coach Michael Di Venuto:

"That was a tough day. It did a lot more than we thought it was going to. It swung, seamed and spun a bit as well. The boys had to work pretty hard out in the middle for the runs.

"Sam Curran played superbly against a very good, disciplined attack that bowled really well and had good variation with their two spinners.

"We wanted to have a crack at them tonight and knock a couple over but it wasn't to be. The rewards didn't come for us but tomorrow is another day.

"Our tail hasn't been the best this year so to save wasting time and to get those nine overs to try to get a couple of wickets was the intention. It was the last thing they were expecting."
