Pace bowler Jake Ball added to England's injury problems before the first Ashes Test against Australia when he sprained an ankle in a warm-up game.

Bowling his fourth over on the second day against a Cricket Australia XI, Ball collapsed in his delivery stride and limped off the field in Adelaide.

England said the 26-year-old would be assessed overnight.

Leg-spinner Mason Crane took 3-78 as the hosts made 233-9 declared, before England reached 5-0, a lead of 65.

Fielding coach Paul Collingwood, 41, came on as a substitute fielder for Ball for one over.

"It's unfortunate to see any of your fellow fast bowlers leave the park," Ball's team-mate Chris Woakes told BBC Test Match Special.

"We're a close-knit unit and we try and look after each other.

"I had a really bad one [ankle sprain] five or six years ago, which kept me out for six weeks. Hopefully he's nowhere near as bad as that."

James Anderson claimed 2-30 and Woakes 2-48 at the Adelaide Oval, while former Australia wicketkeeper Tim Paine made 52 and Simon Milenko 50.

On Tuesday, England fast bowler Steven Finn left the tour with a knee injury and was replaced by the uncapped Tom Curran.

All-rounder Moeen Ali is missing the four-day floodlit match because of a side injury.

It is the second of England's three tour games before the opening Test in Brisbane starts on 23 November.
