Glamorgan: Australian Joe Burns signs T20 Blast deal

Glamorgan have signed Australian batsman Joe Burns to replace injured Shaun Marsh for the remainder of their T20 Blast qualifying campaign.

Marsh recently damaged a shoulder in the T20 defeat by Sussex, ruling him out for the rest of the summer.

Glamorgan completed a deal with Burns to allow him to join Usman Khawaja as their second overseas player.

The 28-year-old should be available for the home match against Somerset on Friday, 20 July.

Burns has played six one-day internationals and 14 Tests for Australia. He has also featured in 55 T20 matches in all competitions during his career and has played county cricket for Leicestershire and Middlesex.

He will join a Glamorgan side which has won two and lost one of their opening three T20 matches.

"Shaun going home was a big loss, but we've acted very quickly to get a replacement in and have been fortunate to bring in someone of the calibre of Joe," said Glamorgan chief executive Hugh Morris.

"He is a proven international cricketer who has excelled in both white and red-ball cricket."

Glamorgan have 11 group games remaining as they bid for their second successive Finals Day, which is being held on 15 September at Edgbaston. The four quarter-finals are due to be staged between 23-26 August.

Burns could be available for any potential quarter-finals, but not Finals Day itself because he will return to Australia for the start of their domestic season.

"I have heard a lot of good things about the club and they have been one of the best T20 teams in the country for the last few years and have got off to a good start in this season's competition," said Burns.

"I hope I can help the team push for T20 silverware."

Khawaja will miss the final group game against Surrey on 17 August and any knockout games as he will play for Australia A in India.

Burns is also helping filling the gap left by all-rounder David Lloyd who will miss the next three weeks with a hand injury suffered in the final-ball win over Essex.

"David will have a small medical procedure on Thursday," said Glamorgan head coach Robert Croft.

"We hope he will be batting back between two or three weeks if everything does our way."
