County Championship: Leaders Somerset made to follow on against Yorkshire

Division One leaders Somerset face defeat against Yorkshire after being forced to follow on at Headingley.

Following Yorkshire's mammoth first-innings 520, Somerset were bowled out for 196 having begun day three on 76-4.

South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj did the damage for the hosts with 7-52, Jamie Overton making 52 not out.

Somerset then reached 89-0 in their second innings, only to collapse to 159-4, to head into day four trailing by 165, with only six wickets in hand.

With second-placed Essex in a good position to beat Warwickshire, Somerset are likely to be overtaken at the top if they do indeed lose.

Somerset's batsmen had no answer to slow left-armer Maharaj who bowled unchanged from the very first over of the day and picked up all six remaining first-innings wickets.

Overton's half-century, which contained three sixes, merely held up Yorkshire who had little hesitation in asking their opponents to bat again.

Captain Tom Abell (51) and Azhar Ali (41) got the visitors' second innings off to a fine start, but three quick wickets, including James Hildreth falling to Maharaj, saw them stumble.

Tom Banton (58 not out) went on the charge with a flurry of fours, but Maharaj got George Bartlett caught at slip late in the day to cap Yorkshire's dominance.

Yorkshire spinner Keshav Maharaj:

"Coming out from doing nothing besides fitness in our off-season back home, I think I've surprised myself. But the wickets have assisted me and the dividends are paying out now.

"My game plan is simple. I'm trying to stop the game. If I pick up wickets as well, so be it.

"We're now in a good position in the game. Hopefully we can finish it off.

"I've enjoyed my time here. They are a very welcoming county. I will most likely be coming back in the latter part to hopefully finish off the season."

Somerset fast bowler Jamie Overton:

"It was tricky. Some were spinning, some weren't. You didn't really know what it was going to do. I stuck to my method, and it seemed to work. Hopefully I can do it in the second innings for a bit longer.

"I just to tried to stay leg-side of it and keep my pads out of the way because the dangerous ball is the one that's going to get you lbw.

"We're going all right in the second innings. We'd have like either Tom Abell or Azhar Ali to still be there. But Tom Banton's come in and played one of his effortless knocks.

"Hopefully he can bat all day and we can chip in around him. We can save it. We have definitely got the capability with the bat. We have a lot of batting left."
