Worcestershire's Dillon Pennington struck twice in three overs at Trent Bridge

Bad weather ruined the return of crowds to county cricket on day one between Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire.

Just 11.1 overs were bowled before lunch as Nottinghamshire made 38-1 for the loss of Ben Slater, caught behind by Ben Cox off Dillon Pennington.

Worcestershire then struck twice in successive overs either side of two rain breaks after lunch.

Alzarri Joseph had Haseeb Hameed caught behind for 24, then Pennington got Joe Clarke to leave the hosts on 51-3.

The entire third session was lost, although it took until 18:20 BST before play was finally called off for the day.

Ben Duckett will resume in the morning on 11, with Luke Fletcher the new man due in, having been selected for nightwatchman duty when Clarke was dismissed cheaply again by his former club in what proved to be the final ball before tea - and of the day's play.

There were more than 1,000 people inside when they began on time at Trent Bridge but that figure had long since dwindled by the time play was finally called off on a cold, grim Nottingham day.

Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper Tom Moores:

"It is great to have spectators back in. To hear that ripple of applause around the ground when someone gets a boundary, to just see faces in the ground after so long is good.

"There is another level of excitement when you've got fans in the ground. But it was tough to get started and keep coming off.

"For a batter to get into any rhythm was a real challenge. We can't help the weather and the pitch is doing a bit but we still back ourselves to put a big score on the board."

Worcestershire fast bowler Dillon Pennington:

"It's difficult as a bowler to be stopping and starting. It was frustrating to be on and off.

"But it was a relief to get those couple of wickets.

"I haven't had the success that I want or the team needs from me so far."
