County Championship: Worcestershire beat Derbyshire for first win of summer

Dillon Pennington, 22, recorded career-best figures twice in the same game

Worcestershire completed their first County Championship win of the summer by beating Derbyshire by an innings and 23 runs on the fourth morning.

Resuming on 112-6, the visitors needed another 39 runs just to make the Pears bat again - but lost their last four wickets for only 16.

Joe Leach removed Wayne Madsen (45), before Dillon Pennington took two wickets to finish with 5-32.

Dustin Melton was the last man out as Derbyshire's winless start continued.

They have now drawn three and lost four of their opening seven matches in Group One, while victory for Worcestershire was their first of the season at the eighth attempt.

Pennington, playing in his 20th first-class match, returned career-best figures for the second time in the game - his five-wicket haul in the second innings coming after taking 4-44 in the first.

Worcestershire head coach Alex Gidman told BBC Hereford & Worcester:

"It's been a challenging season for lots of different reasons, but the hard work that the lads have put in has paid off and they thoroughly deserved this victory.

"Everything went to plan. Jack Haynes, Brett D'Oliveira and Ed Barnard contributed again.

"The bowlers then took over and went to work. We knew it was going to be really hard but, as we went through them, we thought things might turn slowly - as they did."

Derbyshire head coach David Houghton:

"Our problem at the moment is pretty plain to see. We haven't batted well as a unit yet.

"The only game where we've been on the front foot was the home game against Worcestershire when we scored 400 batting first.

"If we are batting second we're only getting 180-200 and if we're batting first we are getting bowled out too cheaply."
