One-Day Cup: Glamorgan beat Warwickshire by two wickets

Glamorgan scrambled home against Warwickshire by two wickets with just two balls to spare in a low-scoring One-Day Cup thriller.

They reached 225-8 with half-centuries from Kiran Carlson and Billy Root.

But 17-year-old spinner Jacob Bethell caused havoc with 4-36 before a ninth-wicket stand of 30 from Roman Walker and Lukas Carey sealed victory.

Stand-in skipper Michael Burgess led from the front with 73 in the visitors' 221 all out.

In a sun-drenched match which finished just before the Hundred men's tournament started, it was a timely reminder of the excitement possible in 50-overs cricket, even on a tricky pitch.

Both sides fielded fresh faces with Warwickshire even more depleted by absences and injuries than their hosts, though debutant and Rugby School product Bethell almost spun them to victory.

Chris Benjamin, who picked up a Hundred contract on the strength of his unbeaten 60 on T20 debut, added a maiden One-Day Cup 50 off 57 balls to give Warwickshire early momentum.

Three wickets fell for 19 in mid-innings but Burgess relished the responsibility of his temporary role, steadying the ship before accelerating well in his 91-ball knock.

He was brilliantly caught by Carlson to provide one of three victims for Joe Cooke, whose medium pace proved effective on a used wicket.

Michael Hogan (2-26) was his usual economical self, but debutant van Vollenhoven's 20 helped squeeze useful runs out of the last few wickets.

New Zealand's Hamish Rutherford, on his official debut, played on to Ryan Sidebottom for just seven before youngsters Bethell and Manraj Johal struck in their first overs.

Carlson looked a class above the rest with his 60 coming off just 67 balls, and his partnership of 101 with Root had Glamorgan in the driving seat before Bethell struck with three more quick wickets.

Root (50 off 91 balls) batted patiently, but he and Cooke (22 off 33) fell at crucial moments leaving plenty for Walker and Carey to do as both swung and missed in a nerve-jangling finale, creeping towards the target.

But Walker blasted Ethan Brookes (2-46) for a straight six in the penultimate over to ease the pressure and Carey, whose late runs for Wales saw them beat Glamorgan two days previously, muscled a couple of boundaries off Ryan Sidebottom to earn the win.

Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson said:

"It was a nail-biter at the end but, after a tough loss to take on Tuesday [against Wales Minor Counties] the way the boys bounced back and upped their attitude was pleasing to see.

"Emotions are running high in the dressing room. It's always fun to be a part of wins like that. For Lukas [Carey] and Roman [Walker] to get us over the line was brilliant."

Warwickshire head coach Mark Robinson said:

"Losing hurts, especially when it's close, but we gave a lot of years away to the opposition in terms of experience. We ran them close and we should have won.

"It was a good game on an average surface so we gave a lot of entertainment to a lot of people.

"To have a close game like that, they'll learn loads and that's what you want."
