George Hill made an unbeaten 151, his maiden first-class century, as Yorkshire set themselves up to press for victory against Northamptonshire.

The 21-year-old helped Yorkshire declare their second innings on 406-3, setting their hosts 499 to win.

Harry Brook also made 77 not out from 63 balls and Dawid Malan 75 as the visitors' lead quickly grew.

With 24 overs to bat on the third evening, Northamptonshire found little trouble and saw out the day on 56-0.

But they still face having to bat out another 96 overs on the final day to secure a draw- or even pull off an unlikely win.

Hill, playing his 11th first-class match, had only previously passed 50 twice but faced 248 balls and struck 11 fours and three sixes.

He took full advantage of benign conditions, an ever-wearying Northants attack and his side's wonderful position at the start of the day.

Yorkshire resumed their second innings 85-1, 177 ahead and they built well in a 157-run stand for the third wicket between Hill and Malan before they declared shortly after tea.

Yorkshire all-rounder George Hill:

"I'm really pleased, probably relief more than anything. I think of the last game against Gloucestershire and the first innings here, I didn't really do a huge amount. So, it's nice to contribute.

"I came out and tried to be really positive in my head, almost tricked myself that I felt good and tried to spend as much time at the crease as possible.

"Thankfully I did. I seem to have done all right here in the past, but I batting with Dawid Malan this morning helped a lot. Then Harry Brook came in and helped me just go about my business of milking it around."

Northamptonshire batting coach Ben Smith:

"For us as a batting group, it's about breaking the day down. So, it'll be getting over that first five overs, 10 overs, first hour, just assessing the conditions again, seeing how you feel.

"Minimising your risks, but also making sure that when you do make a commitment, you're fully committed to that shot. Not only that, I mean it's very unrealistic for us to think we can turn up tomorrow, and knock 400 off.

"But there's such a great opportunity for any player out there to go out there and really spend some time in the middle against what's a quality attack, get confidence from that and take it forward."
