Michael Neser: Glamorgan consider replacement as bowler gets Australia call

Michael Neser had left Glamorgan to take part in a national team training camp but is now officially part of the Australia squad

Glamorgan could move to replace Michael Neser after the paceman was called into the Australia squad to face India in the World Test Championship.

Despite not making the eleven, Neser is likely to stay with the tourists for the Ashes series against England.

Australian leg-spinner Peter Hatzoglou will continue with Glamorgan for the T20 Blast.

But Glamorgan are set to be without a second overseas player for the four-day match at Durham on Sunday, 11 June.

They have also been beset by injury problems, with opening bat Eddie Byrom missing the Surrey game in the T20 Blast on Wednesday, 7 June after a blow on the hip from Sussex paceman Tymal Mills.

Glamorgan have opted not to replace him in the squad, despite Tom Bevan's return to second-team action after a shoulder injury, so Zain Ul Hassan or Callum Taylor are batting options.

Regular captain David Lloyd is likely to miss more games with his hamstring injury, but deputy Kiran Carlson is named to face Surrey despite a dislocated finger at Hove.

Glamorgan have four T20 wins from five after victory in Sussex, while Surrey are just ahead of them on net run-rate but have played a game more.

Timm van der Gugten should also return from a side strain to lead the Glamorgan attack at Durham, though selections are complicated by the schedule which sees Glamorgan travel from Cardiff to Durham to Essex with only a day in between for recovery and the long journeys.

The Welsh county will probably now have to implement plans to replace Neser for the following seven Championship games, since Hatzoglou has not previously played first-class cricket.

Hazlewood has an Achilles problem and will not be risked against India in the one-off Test starting on Wednesday, but Scott Boland is preferred to Neser in the Australian side.

Neser claimed 19 wickets for Glamorgan in five Championship games, including a career-best 7-32 against Yorkshire, and also hit a first county century against Sussex.
