Derbyshire have named all-rounders David Lloyd and Samit Patel as captains for the 2024 season.

Former Glamorgan skipper Lloyd, who was on loan at Derby last summer, is the new club captain and will lead the team in the County Championship.

Patel will be captain for the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup, having moved from neighbours Nottinghamshire.

"Both have great experience and have settled into the group nicely," said head of cricket Mickey Arthur., external

"David will bring a real aggression to our red-ball game and I think our supporters are going to really enjoy our cricket in the County Championship this season.

"Samit is one of the most decorated players in county cricket and his desire to win is infectious.

"He has a very good cricket brain, particularly in the white-ball game, and knows what it takes to win trophies, that will be key for the Vitality Blast this season."

Lloyd needs two more runs to reach 5,000 in first-class cricket and has also taken 124 wickets in all formats.

"It's a real honour for me to be named captain of our red-ball side. We have a special group of players, coaching staff and people around the club, this is an exciting opportunity I couldn't turn down," said the 31-year-old, who has a three-year deal with Derbyshire.

Patel, 39, has played almost 400 T20 games all around the world, plus 245 List A matches, and appeared in 54 white-ball games for England.

He scored almost 21,000 runs and took more than 700 wickets for Notts across all formats with his left-arm spin, as well as helping Trent Rockets win The Hundred in 2022.

Patel said: "I am looking forward to working with a great squad we have assembled. The brand of cricket we want to play hopefully attracts the fans to come and support us, they play a massive role if we are to win."

Derbyshire start their opening County Championship Division Two game at home to Gloucestershire on 5 April, and will be away to Northants Steelbacks in their first T20 Blast fixture on 30 May.
