Australia took control of the one-off Test against South Africa after dismissing the tourists for just 76 on a dramatic opening day in Perth.

In the first women's Test between the sides, South Africa were bowled out in 31.2 overs as 15 wickets fell in total.

Australia fast bowler Darcie Brown, 20, took 5-21 while all-rounder Annabel Sutherland claimed 3-19 as only two Proteas batters reached double figures.

Australia slipped to 12-3 but recovered to end the day on 251-5, a lead of 175.

Captain Alyssa Healy fell late in the day for 99 after a fourth-wicket stand of 155 with Beth Mooney, who made 78, to lead Australia into a dominant position after Masabata Klaas' three quick wickets.

Klaas removed opener Phoebe Litchfield for four, star all-rounder Ellyse Perry for three and Tahlia McGrath for a duck to give the tourists a glimmer of hope after their woeful batting display.

But the impressive Sutherland supported Healy and Mooney with a half-century to thwart South Africa's fightback and ended the day unbeaten on 54.

Earlier, Brown's pace was too much for South Africa on a seamer-friendly pitch as she removed both openers before combining with Sutherland and McGrath to dismantle the middle order, with Sune Luus' 26 the highest score of the innings.

South Africa are playing just their second Test match in the space of nine years and their inexperienced line-up struggled in the absence of talismanic all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, who was ruled out through illness.

The Test match is worth four points in the multi-format series, with Australia currently leading 8-4 after 2-1 series wins in both the one-day international and T20 legs.
