Glamorgan have signed Hampshire seamer Brad Wheal on a short-term loan.

The Scotland cap, 27, goes straight into the squad for Friday's County Championship match at Northamptonshire.

The right-arm quick has taken 109 first-class wickets in has career but missed almost the entirety of last season through injury.

Wheal will provide bowling cover initially on a game-by-game basis, with seamers Harry Podmore, Timm van der Gugten and Jamie McIlroy unavailable.

Van der Gugten is likely to miss several more matches with a calf strain suffered in pre-season, McIlroy injured his shoulder fielding against Derbyshire, while Podmore has a broken thumb.

Warwickshire seamer Craig Miles was signed for Glamorgan's opening match against Middlesex but was then recalled because of injuries at his parent club.

Glamorgan director of cricket Mark Wallace said: "With Jamie McIlroy adding to our injury list last week we've moved to add Brad to our squad for Friday's game.

"Brad will offer our attack some extra pace and complement the other resources we've got in the squad nicely.

"We're monitoring Jamie's injury and thankfully it's not as bad as we first thought it might be, so we're hopeful he'll only be unavailable for this game and can use the following week off to further recover."

Glamorgan have drawn both matches so far, in common with every other game in Division Two.

The counties will revert to using a Dukes ball after an experiment with the Kookaburra for two rounds.
