Match scorecard

Chris Rushworth took his first Warwickshire wickets since April, while Ed Barnard took the last three Somerset scalps to finish with a five-for as the Bears got the upper hand in their County Championship Division One match at Edgbaston.

Relegation-threatened Warwickshire, still looking for their first Championship win of the season, made light of their lowly position in the table.

After overnight half-centurions Michael Burgess (69) and Jacob Bethell (64) went in the space of four balls, tailenders Rushworth and Michael Rae stretched their first innings from 287-6 overnight to 337.

Barnard then took 5-54, Rushworth 3-42 and the consistent Olly Hannon-Dalby 2-42 as the visitors were bowled out for 239, despite a valiant 84 from Kasey Aldridge, before Warwickshire closed on 27-1 second time round.

The first runs of the day came from Burgess with a thick edge off Craig Overton that fell just short of Aldridge at second slip and flew to the boundary. But the narrow escape was shortlived before he and Bethhell departed in successive overs.

Burgess edged a catch to James Rew off Overton on 69 before Bethell was bowled by Jack Davey for 64.

At 287-8, that looked to be that. But some lusty late blows from Rae and Rushworth took the Bears to a second batting point and almost within sight of a third until they were finally bowled out, Davey and Overton both taking four wickets.

Somerset were then quickly in big trouble as Tom Kohler-Cadmore clumsily edged his second ball to Rob Yates at second slip before the returning Andy Umeed's middle pole was removed by Rushworth.

From 0-2 after 11 balls, it did not look a lot better when Barnard struck twice to remove Tom Abell and Tom Banton before Rushworth came back to have Tom Lammonby well caught by OHD - 65-5 and all four Toms gone!

Aldridge then dug in for a stand of 87 with Rew (49), before Overton (24) helped him see Somerset past any threat of following on - and close to the Bears' total.

Aldridge was last man out, having whittled the hosts' lead to only 98.

Following an extended day, after Thursday's rain, there were then 10 overs possible before bad light forced an early close near to what should have been the regulation finish time.

In that time, they lost first-innings half-centurion Yates to increase their overnight lead to 125 runs with still nine wickets remaining - while hoping the third-day rain forecast does not prove as grim as it sounds.
