Yorkshire start with One-Day Cup win over Surrey
- Published
Yorkshire opened their One-Day Cup campagn by taking a big scalp as they comfortably beat all-conquering Surrey in a rain-affected match at The Oval.
Yorkshire’s innings was interrupted by three separate rain breaks, the last of them for two hours as they were forced to settle for a final score of 240-6 from 33 overs.
That set Surrey, league leaders both in red ball and T20, a target of 248 in 33 overs, but they fell well short on 222-9 to lose by 25 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
Young Yorkshire opener Will Luxton was the star for Tykes, scoring 83 on only his 15th List A appearance, hitting 12 fours, and well backed by 51 off 38 balls from George Hill and four late sixes from Matt Revis which tilted the balance Yorkshire's way.
But Hill then took 3-41 and Dom Leech 3-48 as Surrey continually lost wickets, thanks to some stunning Yorkshire catching.
James Wharton followed up his quickfire 22 by pulling off three of the eight catches, including two on the boundary, the first of them a one-handed over-the-shoulder effort to get rid of Ben Geddes before also accounting for Surrey skipper Rory Burns.
Burns came in down the order at number four to allow Ryan Patel to open, but he was beaten by a beauty bowled by new-ball operator Ben Coad.
After back-to-back County Championship titles, Surrey again lead Division One with five games left - and they also topped the table in their T20 Blast group to book a home quarter-final in September and a potential first Finals Day since 2020.
Although Yorkshire have been in good red-ball form in 2024, sitting third in Division Two, they failed to make it out of their T20 Group. But, on this showing, having failed to qualify for the knock-out stages last year, they could be contenders 12 months on.
In the day's other Group B game, Glamorgan beat Gloucestershire by 27 runs.
