Dominant Durham keep pressure on Notts

A fantastic four-wicket haul from Neil Wagner and a century from Ashton Turner consolidated Durham’s dominant position in their County Championship match with Nottinghamshire.
Wagner was in a league of his own on day two at the Seat Unique Riverside as the experienced New Zealand left-armer picked up figures of 4-68 on a pitch that has offered little for the bowlers, while Turner finished unbeaten on 114 on his Durham first-class debut.
The Australian combined with Bas de Leede for a swashbuckling partnership of 134 from 120 balls in the morning session to take Durham to an imposing total of 531-7 declared.
Wagner then ran through the Nottinghamshire top order, despite a maiden first-class fifty for 19-year-old Freddie McCann, with the visitors losing five wickets for 26 runs in the afternoon session.
Wagner was well backed up by Callum Parkinson (2-19) but a defiant half-century from Lyndon James (50 not out) led Nottinghamshire to 220-8 at the close, with Durham leading by 311 runs.
Durham resumed after an excellent first day on 393-5ive and although they lost nightwatch Parkinson quickly, trapped lbw by Olly Stone for four, the hosts powered on through new man De Leede and Turner.
They took Durham past 500 before De Leede’s dismissal for a 68-ball 79 brought about the declaration.
Nottinghamshire’s reply got off to a poor start as Ben Slater was bowled by a Wagner beauty for two but skipper Haseeb Hameed (44) and first-class debutant McCann (51) rallied with an 81-run stand for the second wicket.
But Wagner’s dismissal of Hameed sparked a collapse as Nottinghamshire slumped from 96-1 to 122-6, with McCann among the dismissals.
James, along with Calvin Harrison (18) and Stone (18), looked to rebuild again for Nottinghamshire but Durham finished the day well on top.
