Fire's double-header with Superchargers doused by rain

A wet-weather abandonment meant Welsh Fire and Northern Superchargers were denied a chance to significantly boost their prospects of reaching the latter stages of The Hundred men's competition.

Their match, which started over two hours late because of rain in Cardiff on Thursday, was reduced to 25 balls per side, the minimum requirement for a match.

After the Superchargers posted 26-5 off their 25 balls, the Fire faced the first two balls of their innings before rain returned and the match was then quickly called off.

In their innings, the Superchargers struggled to score quick runs. Matthew Short, Nicholas Pooran, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes failed to reach double figures, with Matt Henry and Haris Rauf taking two wickets each.

With both teams awarded a point, the Fire are now two points behind the top three with just two group games remaining, while the Superchargers have moved up to third. The Superchargers could be overtaken before they next play against Manchester Originals on Sunday.

Earlier on Thursday, the fixture between the Fire and the Superchargers in the women's competition was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
