Beating Somerset a 'big statement' - Bell-Drummond

Daniel Bell-Drummond registered his first century of this season's T20 Blast against Somerset

Kent opener Daniel Bell-Drummond says ending Somerset's 100 percent start to their T20 Blast campaign is "a big statement".

The 31-year-old played a starring role, scoring his first century of the competition this season as Kent Spitfires posted 228-5 and won by four runs in Taunton.

Bell-Drummond smashed 12 fours and four sixes off 49 balls to score exactly 100 as Kent moved within six points of the South Group leaders.

"It was a brilliant game of cricket, I enjoyed it from start to finish, and I think the crowd enjoyed it as well," he told BBC Radio Kent.

'Really proud day at my second home'

Somerset, victors in each of their first five Blast games before Sunday, last won the competition in 2023, but have also been runners-up twice in the past four seasons.

"It is always a difficult place because they're always at the top or close to winning this competition, so for us to win [there] is a big statement," Bell-Drummond added.

"I was a bit slow to start but once I got going, everything I was hitting was finding gaps, going for four or six, so it was just one of those days."

Bell-Drummond, who has spent his entire county career with Kent, attended Millfield public school in Somerset as a youngster after securing a scholarship to study there.

"It [Sunday] was a really proud day for me because I went to school down the road and I've got a lot of friends there who are basically my family," he added.

"It was great having them all down [to watch]. It's almost my second home so I was really proud to win in front of old friends and teachers."

Kent next welcome Gloucestershire to the Spitfire Ground on Wednesday evening.
