Match scorecard

Middlesex's seamers blew Glamorgan away as the visitors crashed from 108-1 to 147-7, finishing on 199 all out.

The home side reached a solid 63 without loss in reply to take control.

Captain Toby Roland-Jones led by example with 3-44 after Dane Paterson claimed the first two wickets on debut, Ryan Higgins and spinner Zafar Gohar also taking two apiece.

Opener Zain Ul Hassan hit a composed 65 as Glamorgan started well after being put in, while Ben Kellaway's 54 not out was his maiden half-century.

But Roland-Jones's decision to bowl was justified by taking seven wickets in the afternoon session as the clouds came over and his bowlers started to move the ball more.

Ul Hassan led Glamorgan's solid progress in the first session after being put in, reaching his half century off 82 balls in the final over before lunch with little hint of the difficulties to come.

He survived a close lbw shout from Paterson on six, but the veteran South African seamer got his reward for a testing opening spell when Eddie Byrom slashed at a wide one and was caught behind for 18.

Sam Northeast, on his return to the venue where he set a ground record of 335 not out last year, added 68 with Ul Hassan before being caught behind for 27 from a fine Paterson delivery in his second spell.

That sparked the visitors' collapse as three wickets fell in successive overs for the third innings in a row - Roland-Jones having Kiran Carlson caught behind for four and Ul Hassan caught at slip, either side of Colin Ingram nicking through to Jack Davies for one off Henry Brookes.

Higgins joined in the bowlers' fun as he moved one past Chris Cooke's defence and had Timm van der Gugten caught at slip.

Slow left-armer Gohar claimed two quick wickets either side of tea but 21-year-old Kellaway farmed the bowling maturely and judged his attacking shots well to move to a deserved half-century with his eighth boundary, before Roland-Jones wrapped up the innings under the lights.

Middlesex were left a potentially tricky evening spell to negotiate, but Stevie Eskinazi and Nathan Fernandes started steadily and put the odd bad ball away, despite a couple of decent lbw shots from Ned Leonard against Eskinazi.

A stray fox running around the perimeter failed to disturb the openers' concentration as the home side strengthened their grip on the battle of the bottom two sides.

Middlesex debutant Dane Paterson said:

"We bowled well as a unit and stuck to it when there were lots of plays and misses, with the quick breakthrough just after the lunch interval and seven wickets before tea, it was a great session which opened up the game.

"We didn't get the rub of the green in the morning but we stuck to our plans.

"We've got a nice mixture of senior guys and guys that are up and coming, it's quite exciting to be part of an attack like that with the youngsters coming through.

"Nathan and Eskinazi then batted superbly under the lights."

Glamorgan all-rounder Ben Kellaway told BBC Sport Wales:

"I'm delighted, it's a bit of a relief for me after a tough start in first-class cricket and it's a nice feeling to do it here at Lord's.

"They bowled nicely with a bit in the wicket and put us under pressure, it was a bit all over the place with wickets falling but for me it was about being in my own bubble, trying to fight through it and get a score on the board for the team.

"It's quite difficult and I'm learning as I go with big communication with the coaches.

"Putting 200 on the board and them being 60 for none, we weren't at the standards we desire as a team so it's a big morning for us to bring ourselves back into the game."
