Match scorecard

Joe Root made 67 to help Yorkshire establish a narrow advantage over Sussex as 17 wickets fell on day one of the County Championship Division Two match at Hove.

James Coles top scored with 38 for the home side as they were bowled out for 150 before Yorkshire reached 176-7 in the hunt for a first victory of the season.

Root shared stands of 42 with James Wharton and 58 with Jonathan Tattersall as he passed 50 for the fourth time in seven Championship innings before a misjudgement saw him struck on the back leg by Tom Haines after facing 88 balls.

After being put in, Haines and Tom Clark serenely shared 42 in 6.5 overs but apart from a stand of 30 between Cheteshwar Pujara and Coles, that was as good as it got for Sussex.

George Hill led the way for Yorkshire with 4-22, including two in five balls in his opening spell as Haines was taken at second slip and Tom Alsop at third playing at deliveries which nipped off the seam.

He returned after lunch to pick up Danny Lamb with his first ball back and then removed Jack Carson in the same over.

Ben Coad supplied good support with 3-37, removing Clark for 16 to break the opening stand, getting home skipper John Simpson lbw for six and having Fynn Hudson-Prentice caught behind for 14,

Pujara was superbly caught by Tattersall diving in front of first slip off Dom Leech before Coles saw four wickets fall for 18 runs in 8.1 overs.

In response, Sean Hunt removed both openers before Ollie Robinson was rewarded in his sixth over with the crucial wicket of skipper Shan Masood, fencing to third slip.

Hill played a loose drive at Hudson-Prentice to the last ball before tea butRoot and Wharton rebuilt before the latter hit across the line to give the paceman his second wicket, while Hunt returned to have Tattersall caught just before the close.
